Get fit for summer with our wellness must-haves
Get fit for summer with top activewear, gym essentials and food tips.
With the summer sun making a welcome appearance this week, it’s time to start getting active and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you want to get lean for summer or simply up the levels of activity in your week, get ready to feel good with our wellness tips and essentials.
One of the most important things to remember when you take up a new fitness routine is to keep your body hydrated, particularly if you’re in the sun. Ditch the sugary sports drinks for water and add your own boost of flavour with fruit. We love these infuser bottles from Dunnes Stores and Argos. Add some zest to your water with sliced lemons and crushed mint leaves, mixed berries and crushed ice for a homemade replacement to high sugar drinks. The combinations are endless.
Check out Elverys Intersports for portable water bottles with straps and handheld options great for running.
It’s well known that it’s easier to stay motivated at the gym if you have some great activewear. Being comfortable and able to perform during activity means there’s a greater chance you’ll stick at it. It’s hard to keep the pace at a spin class if your leggings keep slipping down or your trainers don’t support your ankles! We love some funky sports style, especially the bright printed yoga leggings at TK Maxx. Convince a friend to join you at one of Stephen Hurley’s fitness classes for some extra fun and motivation.
Being on a wellness buzz doesn’t mean you need to starve but for most of us, food can be the biggest barrier to reaching our fitness goals. Make things easier for yourself with handy kitchen essentials that’ll make sure your meals are in tip top form! If you love pasta or noodles as much as we do, get your hands on a spiralizer from Argos. Turn your favourite veggies into noodles for a great low carb replacement. Get creative and try it with courgette, carrot or even sweet potato for a plate full of colour and goodness. Whip up healthier chips with an air fryer that cooks with hot air and a teaspoon of oil – voila, crispy chips without the added fat. Keep some snacks on hand for when the afternoon slump hits, we love the chocolate covered almonds at The Health Store. A little bit naughty but mostly nice!
We don’t all have the time or the funds to join a gym and go on a weekly basis, sometimes it’s not practical. This doesn’t mean that you can’t be more active! Get outdoors and enjoy an afternoon run to get the blood pumping if you have 30 minutes to spare. Remember to wear a pair of quality sunglasses to reduce the amount of glare from the sun. This will ensure you don’t have any tension in your shoulders from squinting and keep you comfortable. Fitness fanatics are raving about fitness watches and they’re a great way to keep track of your progress like monitoring your heart rate or distance covered.
